Do We Really Need Grammar?
Click For Audio
The answer is a resounding…sometimes. We all know grammar subconsciously; otherwise, we wouldn't be able to use language at all. Some of us try to understand it consciously. The question is not whether we need to know grammar; the question is whether we need to consciously learn traditional textbook grammar. To that question, my answer is a resounding NO!
But the word that I object to isn't grammar; it's traditional. The way most grammar books present their material is not a useful tool for language learning.
Insiders English helps you understand English grammar in a useful and innovative way. Let's look at the steps.
Four Easy Steps
1
Analyse A Basic Concept
We will learn a simple basic grammar concept. This will give you a bit of understanding. It will also help calm your anxiety. When we have a basic understanding of how something works, we can learn how to use it more quickly and thoroughly without becoming anxious.
2
Explore Examples In Real English
We will look at examples of that concept being used naturally. The examples will usually be in sentences that tell a little story or anecdote about characters you will become familiar with. Random sentences will not help you very much, so I will do my best to give you as much context as possible.
3
Actively Practice the Examples
Practise these sentences actively. Copy the example sentences with a pencil and notebook, and you will learn the grammar point more thoroughly. If you only read the sentences in your head, you will not retain very much. It's important to physically use the grammar points.
4
Make Connections
We will connect those grammar points to the other sections of this website to reinforce each concept. You will see many sentences and grammar points repeated on many different pages throughout the website. We cannot learn any language points in isolation because everything about language is connected.
Have a look at the table of contents page to access the grammar points covered so far on this website. More will be added as time goes on.
